Early Head Start quilt project

My beginner quilting class at church has made quilts to decorate the new Early Head Start building. Babies through 3 years old will enjoy the walls decorated with the quilts we have made. The beginner quilting class called The Cornerstone Quilters started July 2010, since then we have created seven quilts. We have used the advantage of cute quilt panels for the centers and all class members made the same block to surround the panel. Saturday classes have been for layering and construction techniques. Now we are machine quilting, some are not comfortable with that yet. Four quilts are complete, three still to be layered and quilted.
Our last quilt is to be used as a floor quilt, we are using all our orphan blocks etc. It is turning our very cute and will post pic of it next,

                            Our first quilt 4 Patch and Double 4 Patch, the center has our Cornerstone Quilters name and FPC for First Presbyterian Church and the Christian fish symbol. Class members name are embroidered on individual patches. 14 members in all.

 

First border finished

The center border is finished -  now I can cut strips for the other Guild members who are my helpers!
Great progress this week. Wool appliqued holly and berries will accent the tan corners and the outer border.

Designing Raffle Quilt for Stitching Memories Quilt Guild

I was asked to be in charge of our next project Raffle Quilt for our Holiday Bazaar 2011.Of course I started designing right away. From first drawing to actual layout has been quite a lot of fun. Using my grandchildrens colored markers has been so much fun. Posting design layout using a colorful winter scene fabric seen through a window. Name of quilt " I'll Be Home For Christmas". The smaller version of the winter seen will be the outside border with wool applique holly and berries, wool also used on the tan corner blocks around the center medallion.

added border to Teapot Fancy

Yesterday I added the pieced sashing  and blue border and I love it, brings out all the blue accents!

Considering the green paisley for outside border but the blue might be enough, what do you think?

New project machine applique Teapot Fancy quilt

This teapot quilt is so much fun, background yellow fabric has teacups and saucers. I am making this for my Mother's 89th birthday.

NEWS FLASH!!! MIMI SITS IN 100+ DEGREE HEAT TO WATCH THIS!!!

Yes I did and it was hot as blazes at 4pm at the first 7th grade football game! but worth it because it was Abbey's first game as cheerleader!!! What a  cutie!!!
Tonight grandson Cody highschool senior has a game in Guthrie ( 1 1/2 hr away north), Saturday 8am grandson Alex 5 has first flag football game in Burleson Tx ( 2 1/2  hr south) What a crazy good weekend!
Be back home Sun night and ready to quilt all day Monday!

Medallion quilt dressed up with pillows and Schnauzers

I put my decorator hat on today and dressed the quilt up with pillows I already had in another room, then put on my pet photographer hat on and got pic of Samantha and Taffeta on the quilt. I am worn out now after trying to get those 2 precious girls to look at me at the same time!  I needed Victoria Stillwell behind me.
I will love making the bed now that I have completed the look I wanted!

scalloped binding

Pam asked in her comment how to do the scalloped binding. I cut my 3" strips on the bias, folded in half to create a double thickness. I clipped each scalloped high point 1/4" and mitered the binding. I sew my binding from back to front all on sewing machine with a 3/8" seam and topstitch the binding to the front edge of quilt. I also put a binding on the seam that connects the reverse sham to the top of quilt. I used the backing fabric for binding  and underside of the reverse side so the entire quilt is reversible.

Pam also asked for a closeup pic so I found one with the center (top of bed before it was quilted and the sides and sham were added.
For those who arent familiar with a reverse sham. the pillows lay on top of quilt and the sham folds over pillows from the back.. If needed I can take a pic of quilt off the bed so you can see the construction.

In this pic you can see the pillow case inside the second scallop, I had to adjust the pillow so it won't show. This quilt is from book Blended Traditions by Marsha McCloskey.

Blended Medallion king quilt with reverse sham

I have finally finished the king size Blended Medallion quilt with scallops and scalloped reverse sham! It is so heavy,I machine quilted the sides and end drop and reverse sham before attaching to the center section. I always wash my quilts for a vintage puckered texture. This is so big I think I will have to have it washed at the cleaners or go to a laundromat, hmmm not sure what I will do.

Reverse Sham for medallion quilt

Scallops are cut and ready for binding. Reverse sham is ready to machine quilt before adding it to the quilt, my plan is to have  scallops across the top edge  and on side of reverse sham the same large size as the drop.

Blended medallion king size quilt

I havent posted in a long time, I finally got time to work on my king size blended medallion quilt. The edges will have a large scallop. My original plan was to add a reverse sham to the top also with scalloped edge, but I am rethinking that now., Don't want to cover up too much of the square. Today I will play with that idea and see what happens. It fits the bed beautifully and I love it. The side and end drops were machine quilted separately then attached to top square. Top square is 82" and quite a challenge to machine quilt on my Bernina. The green toile is washed linen so it is a heavy quilt.
My beginner quilting class at church is going very well, we are making quilts to decorate the walls of the Early Head Start building . Ages birth thru 3. We began July 12 and have finished 6 quilt tops. With almost all beginners and my first time to teach I decided to precut and teach one block each week. Having a large class has been exciting because we have finished enough blocks to surround center panels each week. I will post pics soon. Lots of bright colors, hot air balloons with log cabin block borders, Alphabet panel surrounded by shoo fly blocks and lime green polka dot sashing, of course a Wizard of Oz yellow brick road quilt, a disappearing 9 patch, a circus panel with rail fence blocks and zebra sashing, and a tropical fish with 4 patch and double 4 patch blocks, some solid squares will have all the names of the quilters and the center bright yellow block with say First Presbyterian Church, Cornerstone Quilters and have a Christian fish symbol. We will be making a floor quilt with our orphan blocks and my leftover bug fabrics.
Also I have been on jury duty for 2 weeks, that has cut into my quilting time but that ends today. The weather in Oklahoma has gone from blistering heat to cool days, it won't last long but maybe no more days over 105!

Has your quilt guild hosted a BAZAAR?

Please comment with information about organizing a BAZAAR, etc. Our guild Stitching Memories in Duncan, Oklahoma has a quilt show every other year. We are wanting to have a Bazaar in the alternate years, we haven't done this before. A few of our members have attended quilt Bazaar's before and are sharing that information. Please share with me what your Guild does to plan and prepare for such an event. I would like to have your info and ideas before Thursday August 12, our meeting date.

Another Bug Jar quilt - for Alex

Alex will be 5 in October, he got his b-day quilt early! I added a spider web to this one and changed one jar to a fishbowl! Next I want to make one with candy jars and one with fruits and vegetables. SOMEDAY!!!

Toile blocks are remade

I worked yesterday taking the brown and teal toile quilt apart --- I couldn't leave the toile scenes sideways!

Each square block of toile is remade after cutting the corners off the squares and adding blended fabric triangles to the opposite sides to make a NEW square. Actually the blended triangles help to create an interesting addition to the Stepping Stones pattern. This is from the new book Blended Traditions by Marsha McCloskey.
As you can see the borders are not sewn, I received a new piece of brown floral yesterday that I might add for another border. That will be next week.
I teach my beginner quilting class today at church and Monday night. 14 of us altogether, only 3 have quilting experience. The beginners are doing a great job, we are making quilts to decorate one of our buildings that will be the new home for Early Head Start, ages birth - 3

Blended quilt with medallion center

This week I have made this medallion blended quilt top, using the book Blended Traditions by Marsha McCloskey. The green background for the medallion is a linen toile (washed). I have been collecting fabrics for a series of blended quilts. I am thinking of adding 12" borders of the red fabric and scalloping the edge to use on our bed. If I do I will add a reverse sham at the top to lay over pillows. So many decisions!

 The first blended quilt was the English Tea Party that I made for my great niece Daniella.

The second is in brown and teal toile, I love these colors. I cut my toile squares from the teal not thinking about the diagonal setting. LOL they are all "wonky" and not on purpose, I have not decided if I will recut and replace them. What would you do??? I really would like some of your ideas!

More to come!!! I have fabrics enough for 6 quilts in all, some will be gifts.

Bernina 430

This week my sweet husband bought me a new sewing machine, a Bernina 430. I have been sewing with Bernina for 30 yr. with a used 830 ( which my daughter has now) and then a used 930 ( I will save it for youngest daughter )
My first sewing machine was a Sears Kenmore with zig zag, paid $58.00  in a cabinet in 1968. After having the 2 used Bernina's this is my first brand new Bernina.
I can hardly believe how effortless free motion quilting is with the needle down function. I will receive free guide classes to explore all the wonderful things to learn about the 430. I did not get the embroidery package at this time to keep cost down. Who knows I may add it someday.
Right now I am amazed by the needle threader, thread cutters and auto bobbin winder. I am so grateful that Dale realizes how much this means to me, he will wait to purchase new golf clubs at a later date.
Many of you sew on updated machines all the time, I feel like my 930 is a relic!!!
Thank you to my local Bernina dealers, who are always a joy to work with and learn about my new computer sewing machine.
