Wool project bag

This wonderful project bag pattern was purchased from Kansas Troubles. I used KT fabrics and reclaimed woolens and my collection of dyed wool from Winterberry Cabin. The detached section is an ironing pad, I need to attach it with velcro and add some kind of closure, might use Velcro. I used a piece of ribbon to string the balls of thread but need to find something that looks nicer. It also needs ribbons to close the needle keeper and scissors keeper. I will use it for wool applique projects

This is my collection of Dream Chairs. I purchased the pattern at Quilts Ole in Corrales, New Mexico. I will try to get a pic and info on another post. These are full size patterns so easy to use. Only the wingback chair is finished. These wallhangings make beautiful gifts and sooo quick!

I last blogged on Oct 4, 2011, where did the last 3 months go? I purchased the embroidery module for my Bernina 430. Yes! everyone was right, it is ADDICTIVE. I made lots of gifts for Christmas but neglected to take pics. I have several projects to share with my blogging friends. Some embroidery, a finished quilt and some new creative projects. So get a cup of coffee or hot tea and take a few minutes to view.
First the Whirlygig Quilt I started in workshop with Becky Goldsmith in July. I was very scared to quilt it myself on my Bernina frame because the centers and all the borders are hand needleturn applique. Lots of hours of enjoyment as I became more comfortable with the applique. With many new projects to start (this is a quilt show year for my Guild) I needed to get over my fear and get this project finished. I worked for 4 days quilting and decided to do a pieced colorful border accent. I am so happy with it and have named it "Bee Happy". It will someday grace the wall of a nursery for a grandchild when KK and Kraig start a family. Until then I will keep it for the Quilt Show on Sept 14 and 15.

My plan is to get back to blogging and have missed reading all my favorite blogs.

Blended Lizzy Mae's Medallion finished

Yesterday I finished my blended version of Lizzy's Mae's Medallion, I love this quilt, Marsha McCloskey's Blended Quilts technique allows me to turn any pattern into my own version. I seldom use patterns but when I saw this one on a blog I knew I had to make it! Quilting with my Bernina 430 with the BSR on the Bernina Quilting Frame is feeling more comfortable to me now. Quilting on Bernina Frame - Lizzie Mae's Medallion

I am slowly getting to know my Bernina Quilting Frame. This week I quilted Lizzie Mae's Medallion. I slowed my speed down and took my time instead of being a speed demon. Slowing down was very helpful. With this project I only broke 2 needles so that is improvement! My blended version of Lizzie Mae is a perfect complement to my living room so it will be mine! I have loved this design ever since I first saw it on Quilter Blogs, I think it was on Joanne's blog Thread Head.

Quilting on Bernina frame

This is my second try at this quilt, the first was AWFUL so i took it all out with seam ripper and re did it trying to work in sections within the small amount of room to quilt each path across the quilt. My first try I did several freemotion designs that I enjoy but learned that the overall quilting wasnt the look I wanted for this batik quilt. So I did loopy flowers on the borders, e's and l's in the blue border and no navy thread across the inside gold border. I did have trouble sizing the designs within the blocks but that will come with practice. So far I have not trimmed so the mood may strike me to take all this out and start over again. Stay tuned for whatever update happens!!!

Whirlygig progress

Whirlygig circular border sections are done, all paper pieced there are 32 of these sections, I love the colors, they will be inset between the applique whirly center and the bumble bee background. This project has been a lot of fun. I learned paper piecing and needle turn applique techniques.

I have started the appliqued outer borders and enjoy the needle turn lots more than I expected! Thank you to Becky Goldsmith for broadening my quilting horizons.

Posting some advertising photos of my quilts that will be fundraisers for my Guild. The Christmas quilt is for raffle. The Quilt Along that I did with Joanne of Thread Head blog and the red lilies hanging from the top of chuck box are for an auction! One of our members husband built the "Hoodlum Wagon". It is a smaller wagon to be pulled behind a Chuck Wagon to provide more places to cook. We had the privilege of a photo shoot out on the Prairie with Long Horn cattle and a mule named "Vonda". Several members attended the shoot, but I was not able to go.

COLLEEN'S GARDEN FIESTA!

After all these weeks of working on my first story quilt I have finally given it a proper name! A garden full of fun for sure! More things to add after my vacation to Albuquerque, our little squirrel who visits all the bird feeders and grandchildrens names on sidewalk. My borders are on but top and bottom both need adjustments, all elements are sewn down except the large hot air balloons. When I looked out early this morning I saw one up in the New Mexico sky!!! The weather here is a nice break from 6 weeks of over 100 degrees many up to 110. No humidity makes 90 feel like 75 in Oklahoma!

More Whirlygigs

More Whirlygigs done and two more basted. I havent had time to do the paper pieced outer circles but have at least completed 2 whirlygig centers. Going to Albuquerque for a few days to visit my daughter. Hand applique is becoming an obsession, I never thought I would have enjoyed it so much!
This is cutaway applique, the marked unbasted areas between the swirls are cut away a little at a time as you make your way around each swirl.
When I get back I will once again work on my story quilt.

Whirlygig class with Becky Goldsmith

Our guild held a 2 day workshop on Monday and Tuesday with Becky Goldsmith of Piece 'O Cake Designs. She was a wonderful teacher. We learned paper piecing, cutaway applique and needle turn applique. Quite a complicated block - Whirlygig! What fun! but kind of intimidating at first. All these techniques were new for me. But with a little practice last night my confidence is BACK!!! Sorry about the bad color in one pic. The middle block shows the true color.

I finished my block this afternoon! I plan to design a bumble bee wall hanging for my future grandchild! Just hoping for now. Planning to make at least 4 whirlygigs, each a different color. The applique flowers will be made with the checks in several colors.
Becky gave a program for our Guild meeting. She taught us so much about color! I have not worked with such bright fabrics before my story quilt so this is a whole new area of color and design for me. Happy Quilting!

Katie the Calico Cat and Quacker added to Story Quilt

I have been working on Katie our calico cat that lived with us for over 14 years and the little Easter duckling that ( you might not believe this!!!) wandered up to our back porch a few days after Easter in about 1980. A friend of our daughters took that little duckling to her Grand dad's farm!!! A great part of the story!!!

Can you spot the changes and find the additions? This project is ALL about changes! LOL! I forgot to pin the small hot air balloons back on before taking this pic so they will be there in the sky. The banners from the large balloons were giving me some issues so had to clear the sky to place them. Notice my pedicure! This is so much fun. I have a 2 day workshop on Monday and Tues and Guild meeting Mon night. Becky Goldsmith of Piece O Cake Designs will teach workshop and give program at Guild. I am so excited!!!

Story quilt more changes and additions

Today I did some planting in the flower beds and potted some tulips in a mosaic pot. Also I repotted the large flowers into a wooden barrel and made some decorative garden stakes. This is so darn much fun!!! Also formed my steps. I received some very nice comments today. One was from Mary Lou Weidman herself!!! Boy did she make my day!!! and Duff too! I appreciate the encouragement, thank you both.

Story quilt progress

I sewed a bit today on my Story Quilt. Made some changes --- I realized that my feet looked like the house had landed on the Wicked Witch of the West --- NOT GOOD !!!!!!!!!!! It looks much better with more of my legs. The brick bannisters were driving me crazy, I realized I was trying to be too realistic with the placement of the steps, so that change is good, I think. Also I didnt like my flower pots so one more change. Actually I changed the hot air balloons too so they have more color and contrast with the border and blocks. With all the colorful crazy patch borders and hoochy mama blocks, it is hard to get enough contrast. This is certainly a learning experience and I am learning from all the necessary changes. I am using Mary Englebreit garden frames with sweet phrases and cut a heart shape to add to the gate.
I may be sorry, but I have not used any stabilizer or fusible for the applique, just sewing them on. Since I cut everything freehand I can re cut as I go and have used pinking shears on some edges.

Story quilt WIP / allergy attack

Over the years we have enjoyed having Miniature Schnauzers in our family. Three are riding in the hot air balloons, Fritz, Millicent and Bridgette. Samantha and Taffeta are with us now and are sitting in front of the gate. They are all made of felted wool. All these pieces are just pinned on. Our grandchildren love to draw on the sidewalk. I will be adding their names to the sidewalk, but not sure how to replicate chalk. Each decision I make requires lots of changes!
We are having record heat in Oklahoma and drought. The sprinkler system in flower beds have kept everything alive but looking so burned. I usually can enjoy this porch all through the summer especially in the evenings, but not this year.
I spent 5 days with my middle daughter, working on 3yr old Payten's room, she now has a big girl bed. Her Strawberry Shortcake quilt is on bed with cupcake sheets and pillow cases and her nursery quilt is hanging on the wall. Her "Mimi" quilt, a 1930's reproduction pinwheel is folded on top of her toy box. I made a 24" bolster with fabric from her nursery valance and a really cute appliqued cupcake pillow trimmed with large rickrack and ruffles. I came home Friday with an allergy attack, and have been feeling too bad to sew. You know I am sick if I don't feel like sewing!!! LOL . Temp was 103 yesterday, that was my temp, the outside temp was 111 !!!!!!!!!!! No fever today, only a sore throat so I am encouraged, and hope to get in to my Dr. tomorrow. I have way too many things to do to waste time being sick.

Story quilt day 8

This afternoon I worked on story quilt, adding my feet propped on the bench, and our 2 Mini Schnauzers. I have moved the furry girls all over, they are in front of the gate in this pic, but they may run around to find their favorite spot. I also made 2 more hot air balloons. They feature Alex and Payten's art! The lace angel under the arbor is my niece Jennifer who was killed in 2000 in an arson fire. I actually have a sweet angel - fairy statue in a planted birdbath in that corner. I wish I really had some capris as cute as the ones I created! I guess I also could have given myself a suntan but didnt! I will do some "planting" in the flower beds next. This is fun but soon I will have to take it all off to start sewing.

Saturday Story Quilt progress

All the elements in the story quilt are just pinned on, I am changing my drawing with additions and deletions! Happy so far! My feet will be last --- everything so far has been cut freehand with only my drawing for guidance. I will have to take everything off to do the fusible applique. But I think I will have to trace my feet. If you are wondering why my feet are going to be a part of my story quilt--- well, this is a view of my garden from my favorite chair on the porch. I sit with my feet on an outdoor foot stool. We have a wonderful old home built in the early 1900's and moved to this location in 1920. The porch in the story in facing the South and is between our living room and master bedroom, each room has a set of french doors going out to the porch. It is my quiet place sometimes and fun family place too! I really should get a cup of Earl Grey tea into this quilt because "hot tea on the porch" is one of my favorite things to do!

Three days sewing at quilt camp has given me lots of sewing time dedicated to my story quilt. The crazy pieced borders are attached to center, the hoochy mama blocks are ready to sew on. I used all my green scraps to crazy piece shrubs along the fence. The brick porch banisters are almost working, all this is pinned on. I have a long way to go but so far this has been fun! I decided to have a hot air balloon fiesta to honor daughter #3 who lives in Albuquerque. The large balloon and banner will say "I love you, a bushel, a peck and a hug around the neck", the flowers in pots are my grandchildren, each in their favorite colors.

Story quilt Hoochie Mama blocks

These Hoochie Mama blocks are additive!!! also made inner border all from scraps from the blocks. NO WASTE AT ALL!!! I cut a strip border from my favorite multi colored stripe to separate the border from the blocks. Tomorrow I will begin sewing blocks together and determine how many more I need to make and also what background colors I need to add. This is FUN!

Happy Father's Day - Fabric scrapbook art quilt

I finished my wall hanging from the Art Quilt class and gave it to DH for Father's Day. I was using fabric for scrapbooking. I used lots of brites to complement the glossy pics from our family photo shoot last October. The center black and white family pic is transferred to fabric. It is my focal point with the large polka dots. The glossy photos looked so good with the brites that I only transferred the one pic. I used grommets to hang with ribbon!

My current project is a sketch of my story quilt. No! I dont know what I am doing!!! but I usually dont! My quilts always start with a drawing of something in my head and proceed to be worked out as I go. I purchased Mary Lou Weidman's book " Out of the Box " a few months ago with the goal of making a story quilt. I decided to stop being afraid of starting so I took my sketch to my local stationary store and had my enlargements made. I have them all taped together and like the size.
Next I will re-design the elements into more folk style whimsical shapes ( remember I have no idea if I am doing this right or not!!!) the one thing I know is I will be as decorative as possible, trying to recreate the scene from my favorite chair on my porch in my "Secret Garden".
Flowers and birds and bees etc, plus dresden flowers and pinwheels representing my sweet grandchildren. Chalk grafiti is always on the sidewalk with their names. My favorite phrase " I love you a bushel, a peck and a hug around the neck", will also be included.
My fabrics are all stacked and waiting to make my first "Hoochie Mama" blocks. The instructions in the book look interesting. Bright colors and lots of contrast and polka dots and plaids will all go into my border blocks.
I ordered Becky Goldsmith and Linda Jenkins book "Curl Up With Quilts" because they have a cute Schnauzer pattern to include our little furry kids. I think they will be playing hide and seek in the flower beds. My dream "gate" is at the end of the sidewalk. I always wanted a scalloped gate with a heart opening, because I want to hang bells in the heart. Well I can do it in a quilt even if I can't have one for real!
My favorite hand painted sandals are black with cherries ( a tribute to Mary Lou ). My capris will be bright prints.

Yesterday I put all the blocks and borders on Lizzy Mae's Medallion! I have chosen to add an outside border to finish. Here is a pic - I have fallen totally in LOVE with this quilt. Of course all my quilts are my favorite colors and fabrics but there is something about this one that really makes me smile every time I look at it.

Progress on Lizzy Mae!

All the 5" blocks are done, will start borders tomorrow. Since I usually design my quilts myself, I am a bit challenged with using a pattern. I got mixed up and somehow got the blocks for the inside row and outside row backwards. The borders will be as suggested in pattern, with tan and browns outlining the applique and the outer row of blocks.

WIP - Lizzy Mae's Medallion

Yesterday I started Lizzy Mae's Medallion blocks.

The appliqued medallion is done by machine with a blanket stitch. The center has been done for several months. I have chosen to use 3 large prints in gradating values for the alternate blocks. The pattern by Lori Smith used subtle changes in value from lighter on the inside row of blocks to darkest on the outside row. My plan is to give my own twist to make a blended version of the pattern. (originally I purchased shades of teals for this quilt, but used them in my Feathered Star so I am using my stash for this quilt) The pattern finishes 60 sq. I am considering adding an appliqued border. I will post my design wall as it progresses.

New pics today with my camera, I think I have been lazy taking pics with my phone, these show the color so much better!

Yesterday I finished quilting my Feathered Star quilt. I made it to fit my dining table, it is the first quilt I have ever made for my table! For anyone who has not followed my blog, I took a workshop with Marsha McCloskey on March 28. Our guild had about 16 members in the workshop. That evening Marsha gave a slide presentation on Feathered Stars. She shared her many quilts with us in person and in slide show. What a treat to see her amazing works of art in person! On my Facebook profile page I have added an album of pics start to finish. Marsha has also added one of my first pics of the finished flimsy on her Facebook page, THANK YOU, MARSHA.

Happy Birthday Payten Hope 3 yr old

Strawberry Shortcake is finished, it will fit the top of Payten's big girl bed ( full size) I washed and dried it this afternoon and the shrinkage is perfect and oh so soft! Later I will make her some pillow cases with Strawberry Shortcake trimmings.

I decided against the Bernina quilting frame because it would have been too large for my space. I did invest in a Bernina Stitch Regulator and I love it!!!

Progress on Strawberry Shortcake Tea Party

Today I had so much fun with the Strawberry Shortcake Tea Party applique. The realistic strawberries brought it all to life and helped me make changes to improve the teapot too. I pinned up border ideas, need to recut to match the pattern or might use all 3 Strawberry Shortcake fabrics and make patchwork border. I really worked too long today I am really tired tonight but am happy with progress. Payten's bday party is May 14, so I need to choose backing ASAP!

Strawberry Shortcake tea party

Strawberry Shortcake tea party is ready! The strawberry fabric came yesterday afternoon, I was soooo ready to complete the cake etc. applique. I used monofilament thread and added some trim to the whipped cream, now to construct the blocks I have made and decide how much larger this quilt will finish. I have to have it ready for Payten's birthday party on May 14th. Friday and Sat of this week my Guild is having a sewing workshop to make more items to sell at our Festival in Sept.
Really tired now making a pot of coffee and will sew for a few more hours.

Birthday quilt for Payten

My youngest grand daughter Payten will be 3 yrs old in 2 1/2 weeks, She wants a Strawberry Shortcake quilt so of course I have started it. Just playing today, still waiting on the strawberry fabric for the strawberry shortcake on the cake stand. Not sure I like the letters but will work more tomorrow. Some of the fabrics are left from her nursery bedding and window treatments so I am carrying those colors through to this quilt.

Traveling Raffle Quilt

This past week Guild members spent 3 days in Chickasha Oklahoma showing our Raffle quilt and selling chances and our cookbooks. The event was the "Hop the River Shop Hop". This is the best pic I have taken of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" 80 x 80".
It is my original design, I am so proud of it. The quilt has been traveling since mid November 2010 and will be shown at many venues until our Holiday Festival Sept 17, when it will be given to a lucky winner. So far we have raised over $500 the proceeds will be used for future programming for our Guild. I have been asked to design another quilt for a raffle for our next quilt show Sept 2012. I know for sure it will have a feathered star medallion center to honor Marsha McCloskey. We were so fortunate to learn from her in a full day workshop and an amazing feathered star quilt presentation.

Blogging faster now & Easter cupcakes

Before making the changes in my blog (because I lost the old look trying to make a little change) My computer was so S L O W ---getting connected to my blog. Everything else was fast as normal, only my blog was slow. Now that I have removed all the gadgets etc from Shabby Blogs ( which I loved so much!) I can get to my blog really fast and move around in there with ease.
Last week I was frustrated with having to redo my blog, this week I am happy with it and so grateful that I can get right to it !!! Someone mentioned that the gadgets etc can slow it down, thank you blogger for that information because blogging is much more fun now!
I am starting the FMQ Challenge that Wendy and Joanne started, 14 consecutive days of free motion quilting! I will post later.

My wonderful day with Payten Hope

My grand daughter Payten Hope is almost 3 yrs old, this is the first time she has stayed without her brother Alex age 5, except for when she was a little thing.
We were up late last night so I showed her how to marinate a beef brisket at midnight --- hahaha --- went through each step and she was so awake and attentive. This morning she woke early to tell me the dogs were out of their taxis. PaPaw always plays with them before going to work, they knew she was here and I was sleeping in a different bed so they were really sniffing at the closed door. So we got up at 7 AM --- after breakfast we spent some time in the garden playing and taking pics, swinging on the new porch swing etc.
After a picnic lunch on the porch, peanut butter and jelly sandwich with fresh fruit and peach tea, we both had a very SHORT nap. But short is better than no nap at all.
The last picture is Payten Hope being so proud of Mimi because I learned to work the DVD player in the bedroom with the toybox and rocking horses. I painted the rocking horses for her Mommy and KK in 1984, they were 5yr and 1 yr old. They are 32 and 28 now. My how time does fly!
Well the brisket is in the oven this afternoon for 6 hrs, the whole family will be here Sunday for Easter lunch and birthday celebrations for 2 oldest grandchildren, Cody Dale 18 and Abbey Colette 13.
I praise Almighty God for the wonderful life and many blessings he has given me.
I will be sewing and quilting again next week after this time with my darlin jelly bean Payten Hope and family.

Wednesday WIP

Today I played with fabrics for Lizzie Mae's Medallion. I made the machine applique center piece a couple of months ago, with a plan to use shades of teal and mahogany browns, touches of reds, greens and golds.

OOPS!!! I used most of those fabrics in my Feathered Star Quilt. I just kept choosing fabrics out of the Lizzie Mae's fabrics I had been collecting since last fall. They all looked good in the quilt that began in the workshop with Marsha McCloskey and grew into a long rectangle tablecloth quilt.
I love these colors most of all!!! So a new plan.

I finally had to decide that I like my blog page and give up on try to perfect it!

Jennifer Lynn angel/fairy, named for my precious niece who was killed in an arson fire 10/1/2000. She was only 26 yrs old and was manager for Estee Lauder at Dillards in Oklahoma City. We all miss her, my sister is an amazing survivor and Jenny is always a part of our lives and our conversations. My grandchildren all call this angel/fairy Jennifer! So now she is planted for this year. I gave her a good power washing to remove bird doo and she loved the shower!
Now on to a good day of sewing with my good friend Margo!

Today I decided to make some changes to my blog design. In the past I was successful but this time a huge failure. I tried to copy and paste from ShabbyBlogs as I had before but couldnt and in the process made changes in layout that I didnt intend.
So far I have done what I can and added a Wizard of Oz quilt pic against a yellow background. If anyone has suggestions, please leave in comments. I am wondering if Shabbyblogs is no longer compatible or if it is just ME!

I love to make square quilts so this is going out of my comfort zone 64 x 96. The drop is just right for my chairs. I am considering making changes to the corners. More Feathered Star play

The large star blocks are 15", the bordered center block is 21", the smaller star blocks are 12". I might try to go smaller. The alternate 6" blocks are economy blocks from Blended Traditions by Marsha McCloskey. The feathered star class I took last week with Marsha has been quite an inspiration to push myself. I think I will make some small easy star blocks to border the 12" stars if I decide on this layout. I am playing with 2 large scale prints for the center border. I have fussy cut the center squares of the 6" blocks using the large and medium scale prints. From a distance they almost look like framed photographs.

Feathered Star block / Marsha McCloskey workshop

My block from the Marsha McCloskey workshop. If you ever have the opportunity to learn from Marsha, you will have an amazing experience.
The plan for feathered star quilt is an organized scrappy blended effect with blocks of different sizes. In the workshop we learned to draft a feathered star so any size is possible, starting with the size of the feather triangle/square. This block began with a finished 1" feather. The inside block is 15". I chose the alternate setting with the added border for a medallion center. I will use Marsha's book Pieced Borders and build my design as I go.
This is the way I really like to work, creating as I go. Of course there is the disadvantage of using up my favorite fat quarters and wishing I had more of a fabric, not knowing what it was or where to buy more. That is what organized scrappy is all about!!!

The first blooms of spring! I love this time of year the wisteria smells so good! Mornings on the porch with a cup of tea and bird watching. I really should spend time cleaning the flower beds instead of sewing and quilting. There aren't enough hours in the day to do everything I enjoy.

Projects finished today

Today I finished one of my PhD's on Myra's blog. The quilt is for Stitching Memories Quilt Guild fundraiser. This is my first "quilt along" that I enjoyed VERY much with Joanne from Thread Head.

I also did the finishing binding on a Christmas Tree Skirt and a Tablecloth that are for the Guild Festival in Sept. I have made lots of items to sell at the Festival, the tops are done so now I MUST finish them. We are having a "Festival Show and Tell" at the meeting next Monday so that will be my inspiration to finish as many items as I can this week.

USMC quilt

I made the Marine Corps quilt for my husband Dale who served 1966 - 1970. This quilt will be used as covering on the seat of his 1951 Ford truck. I will post pics from the car show he is going to. Large squares and lots of borders. I will have to make bound splits for the seat belts to be used. Cotton corduroy is the backing.

Power shopping at Dallas Quilt Show

The day before leaving for Dallas Quilt Show my new book Out of the Box, by Mary Lou Weidman, arrived. What an inspiration!!! I only had a few hours at the show so I - POWER SHOPPED- (learned from many years of buying at market in Dallas and Highpoint N. C. for a store I used to work for.) The bright multi colored squiggley stripe was my inspiration fabric. This will of course be a long process for my story quilt. My theme is a view of my secret garden from my favorite chair on my porch!. The Mary Englebreit fabric has many garden signs that I will use on garden stakes throughout the quilt. My creativity is flowing and my 5 yr old grandson Alex has already requested several things to be added, this will be lots of fun!!!

Dallas Quilt Show

What a day!!! I only had a few hours to see the Dallas quilt show but it sure was worth the RUSH! We had to pick grandkids up at 2:00 so I did some Power Shopping!!! I found the beginning fabrics for my STORY QUILT!!! Alex age 5 is helping Mimi decide what will be in the garden of my story, more to come as I begin and post my progress.
This week I am making a throw size Marine Corps quilt for my husband's 51 Ford truck (looks like TowMater from the Cars movie). It is all Rusted but totally rebuilt engine. He is driving it to Dallas next weekend to a car show.
Quilt shows and car shows!!! Lots of fun.

Guild Newsletter - no sewing today

I did not get to sew a stitch or even open a quilting book or magazine all day. I have volunteered to do the Newsletter for my guild and worked all day on the computer, veryyyyy tiring but several members have responded they rec'd and were able to open the file. Leaving tomorrow for Dallas Quilt Show, staying til Sat night with my precious daughter and family. My sister is going with me, we will have sooooo much fun! Now I don't have to have the newsletter on my mind!

Table linens for Festival

I have added a 2" green paisley border on the runner since this pic and will bind the placemats with the same green paisley. I am shopping for a black and white print for the backing.

This week I am working on some quick quilted table linens for my Guild's Festival in Sept. The Mary Englebreit fabrics are 4 placemats, table runner and table square. I also put together the Talkin Turkey pattern in a table square using homespun plaids and calicos. I have lots of items constructed and need to schedule a couple a days just for finishing some items.

Help!!! This is the second quilt top I have started this week and it is only Tuesday. I am so excited about my guild Stitching Memories, we are having a Holiday Festival in September. Our members are making lots of wonderful quilted gift items and quilts for sale. Also a quilt auction will be held and a silent auction. We have high hopes of raising a lot of money for our guild to plan an exciting program schedule for the coming year. This year we are hosting Marsha McCloskey at the end of March for a workshop and Becky Goldsmith for a workshop in July.

I fussy cut the blocks for the Lily quilt yesterday and have the 9 blocks plus the sashing all layed out on my work table. Tomorrow I will audition borders, this will be a lap quilt.

Help me!!! I am sewing and cant stop, my enthusiasum is at an all time high right now. Soon I will run out of steam and design ideas and get a well deserved rest! Then I will begin free motion quilting all these beautiful quilts and quilted decor.

Folk Art applique table square

This is another project for my Guild's Holiday Festival. The table square has a machine appliqued center bordered with a cute Folk Art print and plaid. The applique is from Simple Comforts by Kim Diehl. I was experimenting with variegated thread that I like to use for free motion quilting, I don't like it so much on this applique. The items I am making to sell at the Festival are going together pretty fast as I am not agonizing over every decision! Also I used Steam a Seam for the fusible applique, the layered flower in center is very stiff that is why I will add a hanging sleeve so it can be a wall hanging. The size is 54" sq.

Our guild Holiday Festival is in Sept. We will have an auction for quilts ( 14 so far ), a silent auction and lots of items "Homemade With Love". That is the theme for the Festival and the name of the cookbook we have made and will be for sale at a Tasting Luncheon the day of the festival.

I stitched down all the flowers and leaves and added an iron accent amythest cross and used a pretty pin on the closure, I will add a magnetic closure under the pin. New project Lizzie Mae's Medallion

Today I started the applique for Lizzie Mae's Medallion, all adhered and ready to machine applique. It has been over a week since I did any sewing, my youngest daughter was home for a visit and the whole family had a wonderful week! All went home this weekend, so I started a new quilt today, Lizzie Mae's Medallion. I decided to do the applique by machine. I have been collecting the fabrics for several months, my plan is to make it by the pattern ( I have never made a quilt by a pattern before) but will add my own touches to personalize the design with additional pieced borders. Since I usually draw my design layouts and work out the kinks as I go along, I hope this will go quickly. Wish me luck!

Bohemian Romance finished

Yesterday I finished Bohemian Romance, free motion quilting using lots of feather stitching in border and some blocks. This blended quilt is based on Spendid Blended Olio from Marsha McCloskey's book Blended Traditions II. The overall large print dark color fabrics create a pretty blended effect. I used a floral flannel in shades of green for the backing. I have not washed it yet ( I love the puckered effect from that first washing) because the water line to washer is frozen. I will post again after washing.

Progress on PhD's

I have added mitered inner borders and pieced outside borders on the batik quilt I started in November, before all the tshirt quilts for Christmas. This quilt will be auctioned as a fundraiser for our local quilt guild.

This quilt is also for the auction - last weekend at a retreat I added the two extra rows and alternating blocks in the corners. A narrow black inner border will accent a 5" wide border of the tan paisley used in the alternating blocks.
Both of these quilts are included in Myra's Phd challenge. I have one quilt to post at "Done", the Bohemian blended quilt has a lovely green floral flannel on the back. I'll post a pic tomorrow when the light is better.

Cold winter fix for drafty windows

Covered the small window with fake fur, really uptown window coverings! Opposite windows on North have 2 layers Warm and Natural and one quilt top.

Well all you quilters out there is the brutal winter weather will love this pic! My quilting workroom is upstairs garage apartment 3 rooms with lots of windows, wonderful in the spring and fall, but this weather has forced me to find a solution to the wind chill factor. I have hung layers of warm and natural batting over the windows, still get enough light. It has helped a lot, the triple bay area is covered with batting that I pieced together so it looks like a hodgepodge but what ever works!!!
Even wearing my cotton quilting gloves to stay warm.
I am machine quilting the Bohemian blended quilt with a flannel backing so that is helping to keep me warm too. Taking a break to make beef stew for dinner and a dessert with sugar free ingredients. Then back upstairs to sew.
By the way I didnt add that I have to go outside to the garage to sew upstairs. That metal lock on the door sure is cold!!!

Wool Jacket almost finished

I am waiting on a few small iron on accents then it will be finished. It is soooo soft and the sweatshirt lining feels really good. The washed felted wools are so easy to work with. I used a plaid wool that came from a skirt from Goodwill for the upper back and front lover edging. the same wool was fringed for the trim on the shawl collar, more fringed trim on back and also some cotton edgings. Can you see on the inside neck that I added a narrow piece from the sweater, added a very narrow dark brown cotton edging to finish. I think I might add an wool applique "tag".

New project

Last week I attended the Oklahoma City Winter Quilt Show - it was wonderful. I sat in a seminar with Barbara Crawford, Crawford Designs. Her booth was the first one that really caught my eye and drew me in because of the beautiful wool applique. Lots of jackets, Christmas Stockings etc. The group I went with had signed up for a sweatshirt seminar called "Now You See It - Now You Don't". I had not signed up but there was room for me to attend for a small fee of $8.00. WELL THAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT $$$ I SPENT ALL DAY!!! As we waited for the seminar to begin I had no idea it was put on by my favorite booth!!! Barbara is a very enthusiastic teacher and the jackets she displayed were beautiful. Starting with a sweatshirt as my pattern and a jacket design idea pattern that came free with purchase of a sweatshirt I started planning my design with the incredible woolens I had purchased from The Rabbit's Lair, thank you Mary for being so helpful in pulling every piece of wool that took my eye!
Here is a pic of my jacket "work in progress" making changes as I go along and adding trims and iron on metal bling. I have ordered the letters in O O A K in bronze to add for my " one of a kind" signature. I am having soooooo much fun, I havent made any designer wearables in years, I was truly ahead of my time 25 yrs ago.

I have been Quilting Along with Joanne at Thread Head. This quilt has been so much fun! All the blocks are finished for my auction quilt, I have added a 4 patch border and will finish with anarrow black border and an outside border of my paisley. My blocks are from the first 10 from 2010, there are 10 more blocks coming in 2011. They will be for another project. Check out Thread Head's blog if you would like to quilt along with Joanne.

I have finished the second one, it is for my daughter in law for bday. the top pic will be layered tomorrow and quilted this weekend. I have never had so many works in progress, 4 in all, the bottom pic is a quilt along I am doing with Thread Head, it will be made for a fund raising auction in September. Also I have a lap size quilt in beautiful batiks that I need to get a picture of. When I started the quilts for Christmas gifts, 3 t shirt quilts, one black and white and 2 Christmas tree skirts, I put the others away. Winter will be a busy time with many finishes, I hope!

Works in progress! January 2011

Happy New Year to all you Quilt Bloggers! 2010 was a busy quilting year for Colleen and I have started the New Year off right.
I hosted the first annual Quilt-a-thon for New Year's Holiday! My sweet sister Janeen and good friends Margo and Ame all came over with sewing machines and projects. We sewed all day Friday and Saturday, Janeen even spent the night, although we were too tired to stay up til midnight and did not make any mischief at all! Ame completed a lap quilt for her son, Margo bordered a lap quilt and layered it and learned to stitch in the ditch. Janeen started a 9 patch Cowboy quilt for husband Buddy.
We sewed, laughed and of course ate lots of goodies, Margo made the most delicious black eyed peas, Ame made a great Italian dip and Janeen brought an ice box lemon meringue pie. We even took a break to watch the Grey Gardens documentary, then sewed a few more hours. A good time was had by all and we will certainly do it again!!! I forgot to take pics of all of us sewing, Here are pics of what I finished piecing, we had fun telling each other what looked good and what might need to be changed, true quilters!!!

Bohemian beauty! what a mix of gorgeous fabrics and colors, this was so much fun! This will be a traveling quilt from master bedroom to living room, looks great both places!

I began this blended quilt last year and decided to change borders. This is for my daughter in law's birthday, a little late, Happy Birthday Sheri Dec 29!

The mixed borders give a new softness to this quilt.

Jason , my great nephew graduated high school in 2010. His Granny, my sister Janeen and I made his t shirt quilt. We used lots of hunting and wildlife t shirts and included some artsy blocks using Indians because his high school's mascot for an Indian chief.

Mimi is ready for a brief rest from all the sewing and quilting. Lots of new project ideas for 2011!

Christmas tree skirt

This Christmas tree skirt is an early gift for my daughter Kayla and her husband Kraig. They won't be home for Christmas this year. We will miss them both but they won't be alone. Kraig's family will be visiting in 2 groups and their church family is awesome.

The pattern was for a table topper in a recent quilting magazine, sorry don't remember which one. Only 1 pattern piece and a lot of fun to make. I just split it and cut a circle in the middle and continued the binding and made ties. She loves these colors, all the colors of her decorations!

Quilt Along progress

I am participating in Thread Head's Quilt Along. This is so much fun! Finally I have caught up with Block #6 and have made several connecting blocks. Joanne is a wonderful teacher! I am making this quilt for an auction fundraiser for Stitching Memories Quilt Guild, for our Holiday Festival in Sept 2011.
We are joining our local Western Heritage Festival that same weekend and the auction will be held at their venue. We are hoping to have at least a dozen quilts to auction. A silent auction for smaller items will be held at our Festival, I am planning to finish the wool handbag with pansies for that auction and maybe a table cloth too.
Joining the quilt guild has brought so many opportunities for service! There are pics of the raffle quilt "I'll Be Home For Christmas" on my blog. It is my original design and we are hoping to raise lots of $$$ so we can bring in more programs. Next year we are having Marsha McCloskey - Feathered Star and Becky Goldsmith - Whirlygig workshops. What an exciting opportunity to meet and learn from these Quilting Stars!!!
